About Our Personal Injury Firm

Representing Texas’ injured, disenfranchised, and oppressed for 130 years.

A Legacy Forged in Justice: The Story of Winocour Law

The firm’s roots stretch deep into the East Texas soil, where in 1889, a young man named S.P. Jones stepped away from his mule and his plow in Harleton and began to “read law” as an apprentice, in the tradition of the time. He was admitted to the bar and built his own practice in Marshall, a booming railroad town that was fast becoming the heart of Texas commerce.

In 1916, that commitment carried him all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he successfully argued for the rights of injured railroad workers. In Texas & Pacific Ry. Co. v. Rigsby, he set a precedent empowering injured workers to seek justice under federal law if their employer engaged in interstate commerce.

In 1949, S.P.’s son, William Franklin Jones, helped found what would become the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, an organization dedicated to protecting the rights of individuals against negligence and corporate wrongdoing. The association’s mission was clear: to stand with those who had been wronged, to resist efforts to weaken their rights, and to ensure justice was never out of reach.

Thus, at its founding, the Association was clear:

The purpose of this organization shall be the advancement of the cause of those who are damaged in person and property and who must seek redress therefor at law; to resist the constant efforts that are now being made to curtail the rights of such persons; to encourage cooperation between lawyers engaged in the furtherance of such objectives; and through such cooperation to promote justice and human welfare.

New generations take on the cause

That same spirit carried forward into the next generations. Franklin Jones Sr. took the mission to heart, even when it meant standing up to the courtroom itself. In 1960, he was held in contempt and jailed for daring to challenge an insurance defense attorney’s misleading argument. His crime? Insisting the jury knew the truth. The Texas Supreme Court ultimately granted his release, recognizing that his defiance had been in service of his client’s right to a fair trial.

Franklin Jones Jr. led the State Bar of Texas as its president in 1980-81. One year later, Mike Miller joined the firm, flexing expertise in federal railroad injury cases. In time, he and S.P.’s great-grandson, Jonathan Winocour, himself a fourth-generation claimant’s lawyer, joined forces, determined to continue the work started over a century ago.

Since its inception, Winocour Law has for Texans facing catastrophic injury, wrongful death, civil rights violations, and workplace injustice. Today, the firm remains dedicated to the same principles that guided their forebearers. And just like those who came before them, they stand ready to take on the next battle, to face down the next injustice, and to ensure that the law remains a shield for the vulnerable — not a weapon for the powerful.
